MATERNAL NEWBORN AND CHILD HEALTH IN COMMEMORATION WITH WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK 2025

Abuja, Nigeria August 8, 2025 In commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week 2025, Silver Lining for the Needy Initiative (SLNI), in partnership with the Rotary Club of Abuja, successfully conducted a community outreach program focused on improving maternal and child health in underserved areas of the Federal Capital Territory.

The outreach, held on August 8 at Durumi II Primary Health Care Center and Garki Village Primary Health Care Center, brought together dozens of mothers and caregivers to participate in engaging and informative health education sessions. These sessions addressed critical topics such as exclusive breastfeeding, routine immunisation, basic nutrition, physical wellness, personal and environmental hygiene, kangaroo mother care for newborns, and the importance of saving for a child’s future.

“We believe that empowering mothers with knowledge and practical support is one of the most effective ways to improve child survival and development” – Hauwa Abbas The CEO of SLNI. This outreach is part of SLNI continued commitment to make health education accessible, practical, and impact full for every woman and child.

Esther Danjuma, a mother of three and currently three months pregnant, shared her story about the challenges of accessing safe delivery. “From struggling to get transport to the health facility, to purchasing birthing kits, it is never easy,” she said. “That is why I am so grateful to Silver Lining for providing the birthing kits. As we say in Hausa, babu abinda zamu ce sa godiya we have nothing to say but thank you.”

Hadiza Isyaku, a breastfeeding mother, expressed her appreciation for the support received during an earlier outreach. “I successfully delivered my baby using the birthing kits that were given to us. Thank you, Silver Lining, for the love and care you continue to show.”

In addition to the health talks, mothers received birthing kits and essential supplies, including mucus extractors, surgical gloves, diapers and deworming tablets (albendazole) for babies.

The turnout exceeded expectations, with more mothers participating than initially anticipated. This response reflects the urgent need for sustained efforts in maternal and child health and highlights the importance of partnerships between non-profit organisations and civic groups.
