Empowering Communities through Adult Literacy: A Pathway to Sustainable Development

We are thrilled to share that Silver Lining for the Needy Initiative (SLNI) has participated in the prestigious 2024 Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This year’s forum focused on a critical theme: “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and Eradicating Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises.” It was an incredible opportunity for SLNI to showcase our commitment to adult literacy as a key driver of sustainable development.

Our oral statement, “Empowering Communities through Adult Literacy: A Pathway to Sustainable Development,” was officially adopted by ECOSOC. This endorsement is a testament to the impact of our work and the global recognition of adult literacy as an essential tool for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On July 17, 2024, SLNI’s Founder and CEO, Hauwa Abbas, delivered an inspiring speech in an e-format presentation. She highlighted the profound impact of literacy on individuals and communities. “Literacy, however, transcends the ability to read and write; it is about empowering individuals to enhance their lives, access better employment opportunities, and actively participate in their society,” said Ms. Abbas. Her remarks resonated with the forum’s theme, emphasizing the integral role of education in fostering sustainable development.

Our participation in the HLPF and the adoption of our statement by ECOSOC are significant milestones for SLNI. They validate our efforts and inspire us to continue advocating for adult literacy as a means to eradicate poverty and promote sustainable development. We are excited to share our insights and vision on this global platform, reinforcing our commitment to the 2030 Agenda and empowering communities worldwide.
